The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed claims that it has received 60 recall petitions.

In a statement on Saturday, July 19, 2025, the electoral body flagged a social media post shared on TikTok, claiming that it had received 60 petitions seeking to recall members of parliament.

The commission termed the post as fake and warned Kenyans against believing such misleading statements.

“IEBC confirmed that as of Today, close to 60 recall petitions had been received from citizens accusing their MPs of failing to represent their interests,” the flagged post read in part.

However, the commission appealed to Kenyans to stop spreading fake news and verify such information from the official IEBC channels.

Four petitions

In an earlier press briefing, the electoral commission informed the nation that it had received four requests to have certain Members of Parliament recalled from their positions.

Addressing the press in Mombasa County on Saturday 19,2025, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the requests would be considered based on the weight of the matters raised.

He emphasised that the right to recall is constitutionally guaranteed, and the IEBC would act in accordance with its legal mandate.

“Kenyans are actively discussing this subject of recall. So, currently we have received roughly four applications, and we will look at them once we get back to the office,” Ethekon said.

“It is the right of every Kenyan to exercise their right to recall an MP as per the Constitution, and as the electoral board, we will do what the law allows us to do,” he added.

The IEBC chairperson also announced that the electoral body would soon commence conducting the pending by-elections in several sub-counties across the country.

He noted that the IEBC would work jointly with Parliament and political parties to address the issue of pending by-elections in the next few days. “This is our priority,” he said.

By-elections

Ethekon also announced that the commission had begun preparations to update the voter register ahead of 23 pending by-elections across the country.

“This is a priority matter. As you have noticed, two years plus have already passed. Constituencies like Banisa in Northeastern have gone almost three years without an MP,” he noted.

The by-elections include one Senate seat, six parliamentary seats, and 16 MCA positions. Among the most anticipated is Kasipul Constituency, where MP Charles Were was assassinated on May 1, 2025.
