IEBC boss calls for consensus on electoral boundaries
By Kiprono Keileb, March 4, 2026The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has called for open and inclusive talks on electoral boundaries, warning that trust and public participation remain central to Kenya’s democracy.
The message was delivered during the 8th People’s Dialogue Festival at Uhuru Park, where leaders, youth, and civil society groups gathered to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and future reforms.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the commission said its Chairperson Erastus Ethekon addressed participants at the four-day forum and spoke about the state of the country’s democracy and the need for collective responsibility in strengthening it.

“Today, IEBC Kenya, led by Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, addressed participants at the 8th People’s Dialogue Festival, held at Uhuru Park from 4th–7th March 2026, reflecting on Kenya’s democratic challenges while expressing confidence in its continued progress,” the statement by IEBC reads.
Speaking at Uhuru Park, a ground long associated with political struggles and reform movements, Ethekon reminded Kenyans that democratic institutions alone cannot carry the burden of safeguarding elections and governance without active citizen involvement.
“It is both an honour and a responsibility to stand at Uhuru Park, a space deeply woven into Kenya’s democratic journey. Democracy is not sustained by institutions alone. It is sustained by participation, by trust, and above all, by people especially our youth,” Ethekon said.

The commission further pointed to the long-standing issue of boundary delimitation, noting that it remains sensitive and requires careful handling through dialogue that respects the Constitution and the law while also listening to citizens.
“Ethekon underscored the urgency on boundary delimitation, matter, calling for structured and inclusive dialogue anchored in constitutional and legal frameworks. While acknowledging that the courts may pronounce themselves on specific issues, he emphasized that sustainable solutions require consensus-building and public confidence through open engagement,” the statement reads.
