How schools defied wave of unrest to shine in exam

Five secondary schools that were rocked by unrest in Bungoma county weathered the storm to post impressive results in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

Lugulu Girls, St Luke’s Kimilili, St Mary’s Kibabii, Chesamisi Boys and Bungoma High recorded stellar performance despite sending away students over indiscipline cases in the middle of the exams.

Lugulu Girls made a comeback in the just released exams after it posted a mean grade of 9.3 emerging second in the county after Friends School Kamusinga, which registered a mean score of 9.6.

Lugulu, a yesteryear academic giant, was last year on the spot when the girls went on rampage after one of them was allegedly defiled while taking a bath. Three candidates were expelled.

Caterers and a matron were fired for allegedly inciting the girls to strike.

Deputy principal Catherine Kisaka said they were happy to be back on the academic map after being in the cold for a while.

And in Chesamisi, the candidates posted good results despite student unrest last year. The school had a mean of 6.2 from the previous 5.6 in 2019.

Students went on rampage accusing the deputy principal for changing their entertainment from night to daytime.

St Luke’s Kimilili Boys also performed well even after the students spent almost a month at home for going on rampage.

They accused the head boy of punishing a student found in possession of bhang.

Kibabii also performed well after it posted a mean of 8.57 with 369 students getting direct entry to university.

School was once closed indefinitely after students attempted to burn down a dormitory.
