Details have emerged on how a senior Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) cleric defaulted on a Sh7 million loan owed to Sheria Sacco, shouldering his guarantors the burden of clearing the debt.

Newly elected PCEA Treasurer Rev David Ndumo has attracted the wrath of his 15 guarantors who have moved to court and obtained orders to auction his property to recover the dues.

Acting on court orders, auctioneers raided his home in the leafy suburbs of Marurui estate on February 21, carting away electronics, furniture and cars to recover monies now being deducted from the guarantors.

The Cooperative Tribunal, which is handling the case, granted Wright Auctioneers orders to attach the clergy’s property to recover Sh7,616,309 after he failed to pay the loan.

Lawyer Wambugu Wanjohi (for the guarantors) said his clients welcomed the orders to auction the property as some of them had been forced to pay up to Sh2 million to the sacco.

“Our clients are guarantors of David Ndumo in Sheria Sacco, who guaranteed him some money up to the tune of Sh5 million. He failed to honour his obligation of repaying those loans. Back in 2019, we went to court and obtained orders that he should pay that money plus the interest which comes to about Sh7 million,” Wanjohi said.

The case started in 2019 but was dealt a blow at the onset of Corona pandemic but judgment authorising auctioning of property was finally granted in November 2023.

PCEA Moderator of the General Assembly Rev Thegu Mutahi under whom Ndumo serves is yet to issue a statement on disciplinary measures to be taken against the clergyman.
