A Senate committee has demanded a motorcycle credit company to have its directors grilled over alleged malpractices and exploitation of Kenyans by the firm.

The Senate Trade, Industrialisation and Tourism Committee chaired by Kajiado lawmaker Seki Lenku Ole Kanar turned away the management of Watu Motor Credit Company for failing to produce its directors for questioning.

Yesterday, the committee demanded to grill the directors of the company that mainly advances loans for tuk-tuks and motorcycle operators across the country for alleged exploitation, repossession of the items and wanton theft of the motorcycles.

The revelations emerged after Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei petitioned the House over what he termed as widespread complaints by boda boda and tuk-tuk operators against the Watu Credit Company.

Directors demanded

The Senator Lenku Ole Kanar – led committee demanded that the credit firm to produce its directors after Manager Director Eric Massawe made submissions but were not acted upon.

The Watu Company provides credit facilities to customers seeking to buy motorcycles and tuk-tuks, especially for commercial purposes across the country.

However, there are complaints of alleged high interest rates charged by the firm on the customers benefiting from their services.

It is further alleged that the company has been repossessing motorbikes and tuk-tuks from customers who delay repaying the loans.
