The prices of livestock feed will drop by over 20 per cent if the government allows manufacturers to import Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) crops as their raw materials.

Manufacturers have blamed the current rise in animal feed to the high prices of raw materials from neighboring countries, noting that GMO was the way to go.

This came as it emerged that over 50 per cent of livestock feed manufacturers had closed down in the last two years, as they could not cope with the high cost of production. According to chairman Association of Kenya Feed Manufacturers John Gathogo (pictured), the livestock sector was on its knees due to the current challenges. He said that already, 50 percent of manufacturers had closed down while those in operation had downsized by over 40 per cent.
