Siaya: Gov’t urged to complete Goye Bridge to end persistent flash floods

By , April 8, 2023

The government has been urged to allocate resources to complete Goye Bridge in West Yimbo that has halted flow of water to Lake Victoria hence causing floodings in the nearby villages.

Siaya Governor James Orengo said the state diverted the money that was meant for the completion of the project.

“I have witnessed how the stalled bridge is frustrating the flow of water from Lake Sare to Lake Victoria. I will liaise with the office of the MP to revive talks with the national government to complete the bridge, ” Orengo stated.

Orengo said the backflow of water has caused floodings to 47 households and destroyed 100 acres of crop plantation.

KeNHA’s promise

Orengo stated that the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) officials had paid him a visit at his office in Siaya where they discussed development of various infrastructure projects including Kisumu and Got Agulu road and Goye bridge.

He added that if the ministry concern does not expedite the completion of the project, then it will require short term strategy that includes erecting of culverts to enhance water flow.

Bondo Member of Parliament (MP) Gideon Ochanda echoed Orengo’s sentiments saying it was high time the bridge was completed.

The pile up of the water volumes has extended up to 40 Kilometers.

“The contractor is already on site and trying to place culverts to reduce the volume of water piling up,” Ochanda said.
