‘Gov’t should listen to people, initiate dialogue’ – ICJ
The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya) has called on the government to "listen to the people" and initiate a dialogue with the opposition to end the current political impasse.
In a statement, the non-governmental organisation, which is part of the International Commission of Jurists, has also asked Kenyans to maintain peace.
"It is crucial that the government listens to the people's voices and initiates meaningful dialogue to ease the tensions," ICJ stated.
"We are deeply concerned about the negative impact of ongoing protests on Kenya's economic stability, peace and the well-being of its citizens. The widespread tension and instability witnessed across the country should be a clear message to all involved parties."
This comes even as the opposition intensified countrywide demonstrations to push the government to reduce the cost of living.
Several people have so far died during protests, with some having been shot by the police.
On July 14, the UN expressed concerns over police brutality meted on demonstrators during protests organised by the opposition.
On Wednesday, protestors in different parts of the country engaged anti-riot police in running battles.
A number of opposition leaders and protestors were on Wednesday arrested before and during protests, even as police tried to contain the situation.
Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua condemned the “reported arrest and abduction” of Azimio leaders in the wake of planned three-day protests.
Among those arrested is Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino who was arrested at the JKIA, MP Ken Chonga of Kilifi South and a number of MCAs over ongoing anti-government demos.
