The Ministry of Interior has gazetted a new command structure and functions of the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU), which is a specialised formation within the National Police Service

Taking it to the X handle on Monday, February,9,2026 the Ministry of Interior has said that the new command structure, NGAPU, has been established to support National Government Administrative Officers while carrying out their lawful duties and to provide security.

“The new command structure and functions of the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) have been gazetted. NGAPU is a specialised formation within the National Police Service established to support National Government Administrative Officers while carrying out their lawful duties and to provide security.” The Ministry of Interior noted.

Launch of the Specialised Unit

The new police unit was launched on January 24, 2025, in Kwale by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. The National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) is under the Administration Police Service (APS). It was designed to enhance collaboration between the National Police Service and National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs).

“There is an immediate need to support other security organs in confronting security challenges threatening law and order. The ability to detect, disrupt, deter, and investigate these threats depends on our capacity to operate effectively in a high-tech environment. I would also like to reassure you that we will work with your leadership to address issues around social welfare, training, better equipment and other matters of concern to dignify your work,” Murkomen said.

Operating under the Deputy Inspector General of the APS, NGAPU is expected to support chiefs and their assistants in enforcing law, implementing national policies, and improving public safety at the grassroots level across Kenya.

The Ministry of Interior has further indicated that the specialised unit will be headquartered in Nairobi. NGAPU will maintain subsidiaries at regional, county, sub-county, divisional, and location levels to ensure nationwide coverage. With a focus on grassroots operations, NGAPU deploys officers to work alongside approximately 3,950 chiefs and 9,043 assistant chiefs.

Importance of the specialised unit

The unit, according to the ministry, will bridge the gap between the National Government Administration and Local Communities, ensuring effective delivery of services and policies at the grassroots. By supporting National Government Officers, NGAPU will aim at public safety, strengthening law enforcement, and fostering trust in government operations.
