The government has released Ksh3.2 billion for the Inua Jamii programme.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Labour, the money is meant for June 2024 payment to beneficiaries enrolled in the Inua Jamii programme.

Inua Jamii Programme is a social pension offering universal pension coverage for all citizens of Kenya once they reach 70 years of age. The government cash transfer initiative supports the most vulnerable members of the community by providing them with a stipend to cushion them from poverty, and hunger and improve their lives.

In the statement, the Ministry of Labour disclosed that 570,263 new beneficiaries have been onboarded to the programme.

Following the enrolment of over half a million new beneficiaries, the Ministry of Labour noted that the June payroll is 1,607,996 up from 1,037,733 in May 2024.

"This follows His Excellency President Dr William Ruto's directive last year to upscale the programme to 2.5M beneficiaries which will be done in phases," the Ministry of Labour explained.

According to the Ministry which is led by Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore, the payments will start on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

"All those new beneficiaries who have opened bank accounts will be paid from Wednesday," the Ministry added.

Streamlining Inua Jamii

After assuming office, President William Ruto's administration vowed to streamline the Inua Jamii cash transfer programme to increase coverage and accountability.

Social Security and Protection Principal Secretary Joseph Motari stated that streamlining the programme was in line with the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto which seeks to improve the lot of vulnerable senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Motari assured the beneficiaries of timely and efficient payments noting that the delayed payment of the two payment cycles was occasioned by the transition from the previous administration to the Kenya Kwanza Government.

“We wish to assure the beneficiaries of the Inua Jamii programme that the government will disburse their money at the appropriate time to cushion the vulnerable and elderly persons in the society against poverty,” Motari stated.

Moreover, in 2023, the Head of State directed the ministry to upscale the programme to 2.5 million beneficiaries which will be done in phases.

Ruto further instructed that the money be disbursed on the 15th day of every month.

“If there are people who deserve our support, it is vulnerable in society,” President William Ruto emphasised.
