Governor urges MPs to voice voters’ views on law
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has called upon lawmakers to prioritise the voices of Kenyans as they debate on the Finance Bill, 2024.
While welcoming proposed amendments by the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning to some controversial clauses of the Finance Bill, 2024, ahead of the tabling today, the Mombasa county boss called on the legislators, predominantly from Mombasa and the Coast region, to consult extensively with their constituents before representing their views in Parliament.
Nassir was speaking after the Eid-ul-Adha prayer at the Ronald Ngala Primary School Grounds on Monday where he said “It is vital for the ODM MPs to take the party position after going through the report.”
People’s proposals
“I have been informed that the National Assembly Finance Committee has proposed amendments to some clauses in the Finance Bill, 2024. It’s crucial for our legislators to review these recommendations thoroughly,” Governor Nassir stated, “They must consult their constituents and align with the party’s position to ensure that the people’s proposals are reflected.”
The governor also touched on the “One Man, One Shilling” debate, emphasising the need for fair resource allocation among counties.
While acknowledging Mombasa’s significant contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its large population, Nassir stressed the importance of considering the welfare of neighboring counties such as Lamu, Tana River, Kwale and Taita Taveta.
