Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe is set to address the nation on the status of Covid-19 and response measures after NERCC meeting at Harambee House today.

In a statement to media houses on Friday, July 30, the office of the government spokesperson had earlier said the press briefing would be at 11 am only for the address to be postponed to 2pm.

“Due to unavoidable circumstances, the time for the Briefing by Sen. Mutahi Kagwe, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health, on the COVID-19 Containment Measures Update has been adjusted to 2pm at Harambee House Grounds,” the statement from the government spokesperson said in part.

On Thursday, July 29 the Ministry of Health announced that 1,068 people tested positive for the disease, a increase in new infections seen in recent weeks.

MoH said the 1,068 tested positive from a sample size of 7,398 bringing the total confirmed positive cases to 201,009.

Cumulative tests so far conducted are at 2,116,979 while the positivity rate as of yesterday stood at 14.4%.

CS Kagwe is also expected to address the 60-day 7 pm to 4 am curfew imposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta on 13 lake region counties which will lapse on Saturday, July 31.

Despite protests by local religious leaders and a section of residents who demanded places of worship to be opened, security officers in the 13 counties made sure the new Covid-19 measures are effected.

The 13 counties affected include Kisumu, Siaya, Homa-Bay, Migori, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet and Trans-Nzoia.

Residents of the said counties have been hoping for a review of Covid-19 measures so that they can resume normalcy given that many were affected negatively by the tough measures.
