Government issues alert as River Nyando floods Ahero Bridge
The government has issued an urgent public alert following severe flooding along the River Nyando at the Ahero Bridge, warning motorists and residents to exercise extreme caution. The flooding, which has been attributed to rising water levels, has rendered sections of the Kisumu–Kericho highway impassable, posing a significant risk to road users.
In a press release dated Monday, March 23, 2026, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed that the river had burst its banks, leading to water overflowing onto the roadway. He noted that water levels are still rising, increasing the danger for motorists attempting to cross the affected section.
‘The Government wishes to notify the public that River Nyando has burst its banks at Ahero Bridge along the Kericho–Awasi–Kisumu road. The river has overflowed onto the roadway, with water levels continuing to rise and posing a significant risk to motorists and other road users,” a statement from government spokesperson read in part.

The government has further through the notice advised all road users to avoid the flooded area and instead use alternative routes. Traffic heading to and from Kisumu has been redirected through the Timboroa–Lesos–Kapsabet–Chavakali route until the situation stabilises. The directive follows guidance from the Nyanza Regional Traffic Command, aimed at ensuring public safety and preventing potential accidents.
The government has particularly cautioned against travelling at night, when visibility is low, and it becomes difficult to assess the depth and force of the flowing water. Drivers are urged not to attempt crossing flooded sections, as this could lead to vehicles being swept away.
Emergency response teams on standby
Emergency response teams are closely monitoring the situation, with officials pledging to provide timely updates as conditions evolve. The government has also called on residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.

Flooding along the River Nyando has historically disrupted transport and livelihoods in the region, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. This latest incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of infrastructure in flood-prone zones and the need for long-term mitigation measures.
As the government highlights efforts to manage the crisis, the government is urging cooperation from the public to minimise risks and ensure safety for all road users.
