Gikomba to acquire title deed, assures DG
By Alvin.Mwangi, January 12, 2023Nairobi County Government will issue the title deed for Gikomba market and fence it as part of its strategy to prevent constant fires and protect businesses.
Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri yesterday said the county is instituting long-term measures that will solve endless problems in the market.
The title deed is currently in the hands of an individual.
“Our administration has already embarked on the process to acquire Gikomba’s title deed. Once the county has the title deed no private developer will come to threaten the traders of demolitions,” Muchiri said. The DG explained that having the market fenced will be easier for the county to even provide security officers to man the facility both day and night. “Gikomba is public land and we will build a wall around it. As a county, we pledged to defend and protect the market from grabbers,” Muchiri noted.
In his manifesto, Governor Johnson Sakaja pledged to construct 20 markets, which will see decongestion of Gikomba market.
On December 29, 2022 Sakaja promised to make the market fires a thing of the past in the New Year.
The DG said the county has already identified land where the new markets will be set up.
“We will construct 20 markets which will not only decongest Gikomba but also give more space for traders. As the DG, this plan is under my watch and I’ll ensure that the promise is fulfilled,” Muchiri said.
Also, to decongest Gikomba, City Hall has started probing why newly built markets have remained unoccupied despite their completion.
