Former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has raised alarm over the massive cases of vandalism and looting experienced during the Tuesday, July 2, 2024, anti-government protests.

In a statement, the Kenya African National Union (KANU) chairperson noted that what used to be a peaceful protest led by youths armed with their phones and bottles of water has now taken a new twist following the infiltration of goons.

Gideon Moi argued that the infiltration of vandals and looters is a well-choreographed scheme aimed at discrediting peaceful protests in various parts of the country.

"Over the past two weeks, the protests have been notably peaceful, characterized by participants carrying placards, and water, and chanting in solidarity. However, today's protests have been visibly infiltrated by a ragtag militia engaged in looting, vandalizing property, and stealing from individuals. These evidently well-organized infiltrations are clearly aimed at discrediting the genuine protestors," Gideon Moi wrote on his X page.

He, however, challenged the youth to help identify those destroying property and stealing from various businesses across the country.

"We strongly condemn these acts of looting and vandalism. We urge genuine protestors to remain vigilant and to help identify and isolate individuals seeking to exploit the protests for their own gain," he added.

Further, he implored the law enforcement officers to swiftly act and bring to book those engaged in criminal activities amidst protests.

"We call on security officers to swiftly arrest and charge these disruptive elements, while also ensuring the protection of the peaceful and unarmed protestors."

Other leaders voice their concerns

Gideon Moi's sentiments were echoed by Parliamentary Service Commissioner Johnson Muthama who asked the police officer to act and stop the massive destruction and looting in the country.

Muthama made it clear that protests should be held within the confines of the law.

"It is unfortunate that what started as peaceful protests has now been hijacked by opportunists and goons who are looting, creating mayhem, and destroying property and infrastructure. This has undermined the genuine protestors and their agenda.

"Respective authorities must take charge and identify these individuals so they can be brought to justice. Picketing is a constitutional right, but it must be exercised within the law," Muthama stated.

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi called on President William Ruto to take decisive steps to save the country from sliding into lawlessness.

"Never underestimate the power of goons, drunkards, street urchins, thugs, thieves, and Genz on the Internet. Ruto, this country is going down. Stop, think, and lead or else resign. You will leave people hating your children and family forever."
