German Foreign Affairs minister arrives in Kenya for high-level bilateral talks

The Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Johann Wadephul, has arrived in Kenya for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries.

According to a statement issued by the State Department for Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the visit marks another significant step in the growing partnership between Nairobi and Berlin, anchored in shared values, mutual interests, and a common commitment to sustainable development.

Bilateral talks

During his stay, Wadephul, who is accompanied by a business delegation, is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and pay a courtesy call on President William Ruto. The high-level engagements are expected to reinforce political dialogue while unlocking new opportunities for economic cooperation and investment.

Discussions during the visit will focus on expanding collaboration in key priority areas, including labour mobility, climate change and adaptation, renewable energy, technology transfer, regional peace and security, and enhanced multilateral engagement.

”The visit aims to deepen Kenya-Germany cooperation across political, economic, and development priorities. Discussions will focus on expanding collaboration in key areas, including labour mobility, climate change and adaptation, renewable energy, technology transfer, regional peace and security, and multilateral engagement.” The statement said in part.

Based on the statement, these areas reflect both countries’ strategic interests in promoting inclusive growth, climate resilience, and stability within the region and beyond. The State Department further said the presence of a German business delegation underscores Germany’s interest in deepening economic ties with Kenya.

”This visit underscores the strong and growing bilateral partnership between Kenya and Germany, anchored in shared values, mutual interests, and opportunities for enhanced investment and sustainable development.” It added.

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the German Foreign Minister was received by Kenya’s Ambassador to Germany, Amb. Stella Mokaya Orina, alongside Judy Njau, Deputy Director-General at the Europe and Commonwealth Directorate.
