Pedestrians forced to use boats as flooded Garsen-Witu -Lamu Road remains closed

The Kenya National Highways Authority has confirmed that the Garsen-Witu-Lamu is still closed due to floods in the region.

The closure is a result of the Tana River overflowing after the heavy rains in the region led to the breakage of banks submerging a section of the road.

Pedestrians in the area have had to rely on a boat provided by the Kenya Coast Guard to cross between the points of Gamba and Lango la Simba.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority hereby informs the public that as of this morning, Garsen-Witu -Lamu (A7) Road still remain closed due to flooding. To assist pedestrians to cross, the Kenya Coast Guard has provided a boat,” KENHA announced.

“Pedestrians are now between the two points, Gamba and Lango la Simba. The road closure followed heavy rainfall which led River Tana to burst its banks resulting in flooding. The road is still completely submerged in the affected section,” the statement added.

In response to the ongoing situation, KENHA has urged motorists to suspend their travel plans until the floodwaters recede. The road closure is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of travellers.

The Authority is actively assessing the affected area to determine when it will be safe for the road to reopen.

“The Authority appeals to motorists to continue halting their travel until the water levels subside and an assessment is done to ascertain if the road is passable. We will keep you updated as our team is on the ground monitoring the situation,” the statement concluded.

Several roads in the country have been affected by the on going rains.
