Gachagua slams Ruto’s war on corruption, says he has no moral authority

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has disparaged President William Ruto’s recent war on corruption, stating that he has no moral authority to speak about graft.

In an interview at his Karen home on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Gachagua stated that Ruto has been paying legislators to support the passage of bills he wants, and that he cannot turn around and criticise the recipients of the bribes.

“I share his views 100 per cent, but he has no moral authority at all to talk about corruption in Parliament. He is the one who has corrupted Parliament; day in, day out, William Ruto pays Parliament for anything he wants to happen,” Gachagua said.

Thrown under the bus

“In the Finance Bill, he paid MPs Ksh200,000 to pass the bill, and when things backfired, he turned around and threw them under the bus,” Gachagua stated.

“MPs were paid Ksh500,000 and Senators paid Ksh10 million each to impeach me by William Ruto. He is the one who has taught Parliament to be corrupt. In fact, there is nothing Ruto does without paying money to people.”

He equally indicated that Ruto was attempting to shift the blame of corruption from himself to the legislature.

“Ruto is trying to shift the focus from himself to the MPs. He is throwing MPs under the bus by saying there is too much corruption, so that people can remove their focus from him and take it to the members of parliament,” Gachagua observed.

Unconstitutional move

Gachagua also stated that the multi-agency team to deal with corruption was unconstitutional, noting that it seeks to duplicate and usurp the roles of independent bodies like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

“He said that he is going to form a multi-agency team to deal with corruption. To start with, that is wrong because we have independent institutions to deal with corruption- EACC and the ODPP,” Gachagua said.

“Ruto cannot take over investigations because that would be interfering with the independent offices and constitutional commissions.”
