Gachagua responds to Ruto’s plea of being given more time
By Lutta Njomo, July 27, 2025Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, fired back at President William Ruto’s plea to be accorded more time to deliver on his promises.
Speaking during a community public rally in Baltimore, USA, Gachagua argued that it was difficult to give Ruto more time beyond the five-year term as enshrined in the constitution.
The former DP told the diaspora community in Baltimore that Ruto’s administration had enabled the killing of various young people during protests.
He further faulted his directive that violent protesters should be shot in the leg, indicating that if accorded a second term, many people would be crippled.
Further, Gachagua accused the head of state of diverting money meant for development towards funding his re-election campaign.

Nonetheless, he asked the diaspora community to bear with him for the remaining two years, until the elections.
“The other day, he was saying that we give him time. Well Mr president, it is very difficult to give you time. You are asking us to give you more time to kill our children and shoot them in the leg? You are asking us to give you more time to empty our coffers and divert those funds for politics?” Gachagua posed.
“But we don’t have a choice because Kenya is a constitutional democracy we just have to persevere for the two years, hoping that we will find something in the national treasury,” he further claimed.
Ruto’s plea
Speaking during the Talanta Bell Ringing Ceremony at the Nairobi Securities Exchange to mark the listing of the Linzi Asset-Backed Security, Ruto pleaded with the country to accord him more time to honour his promises.
“The cynics may say I am lying and the naysayers may even say I am mad. But what if they are wrong? And they are. Pause for a moment. What if I am an agent of destiny for the transformation of our nation whose promise has been delayed for far too long?

“Pause. Reflect. Think. Give me a chance and judge me fairly when the time comes. But we remain focused, purposeful, and committed to delivering what Kenya truly deserves,” Ruto stated.
“This is neither a gamble nor an experiment. It is a disciplined, determined, focused, and deliberate renewal of our nation’s foundation.”
