Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during Tuesday’s anti-finance bill protests, which saw casualties among both protestors and security officers.

Speaking as the chief guest at the annual delegates’ conference for secondary school principals held at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa, Gachagua asked the school heads to observe a moment of silence before proceeding with his speech.

The second in Command who was the chief guest during the annual delegates conference for secondary schools principals at Sheikh Zayed hall in Mombasa yesterday, asked the school heads to observe a moment of silence before proceeding with his speech.

Gachagua asked the teachers to find innovative income-generating ways to make for delayed capitation.

“I want to challenge schools to come up with income-generating plans. There are schools who have bakeries and they bake bread for students. The other time I visited my old school Kenyatta High School and I realized they have vast land which they can utilize for food production and I encourage schools which have resources to make use of them,” he said.

Noting that teachers have the biggest wage bill, the Deputy President was concerned that the government is currently entangled in tight fiscal challenges that make it difficult to go toe to toe with the demands made by teachers.

We have fiscal challenges with a tight budget. We rely on taxes which we collect. We give as we receive. Where there is a delay in receiving there is a corresponding delay in disbursement. We don’t have any stores for Money,” he said.

Regarding the Junior School, Gachagua downplayed calls by the school heads to reconsider shifting the Junior School to secondary school.
