Gachagua leads tree planting exercise in Nyandarua

By , April 15, 2023

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Saturday, April 15 led residents Shamata Ward of Ndaragua Constituency, Nyandarua County, in planting 10, 000 trees.

The DP said the exercise was meant to save Lake Ol Bolossat, which is drying up and facing the risk of extinction.

“We must unite to combat the impact of climate change and promote food security by planting more trees and conserving the environment.

“Restoring the glory of this lake will save lives and livelihoods. That is why I have made a contribution of 10,000 avocado seedlings for farmers in the area,” he said.

He stated that by the end of this rainy season, 100,000 trees will be planted in the region.

“I commend Senator John Methu and MP John Gachagua for today’s initiative.

“This will contribute to meeting our target of 15 billion trees by 2032 as espoused by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto,” the DP said.

“The situation is bad; if uncontrolled, the community will be exposed to the ugly impact of climate change, especially exacerbating food insecurity.

“Based on our findings, and the guidance from our environmental experts, a committee will be established to fast-track restoration of the lake, which will, ultimately, improve the living standards of Nyandarua County,” he stated.

He added: “Because of the diverse ecosystem of the lake, its revival will also promote tourism, hence more earnings for the locals and the country.”

He was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Soipan Tuya (Environment), Rebecca Miano (ASALs), Zachary Njeru (Lands), hosts Governor Badilisha Kiarie, Senator John Methu, MPs John Gachagua (Ndaragua), Martha Wangari (Gilgil), Didmas Barasa (Kiminini), Wanjiku Muhia (Kipipiri), Senators Jackson Mandago(Uasin Gishu County) Alexander Mundigi (Embu County) Lelegwe Steve (Samburu County), Miriam Omar (Nominated) Karen Nyamu (Nominated), EALA MP Iman Falhada, among other leaders.
