Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua left the country on Monday night for key meetings in Belgium and Germany.

In a statement, the DP, who is accompanied by his spouse Dorcas Rigathi, said he will represent President William Ruto at the Global Gateway Forum hosted by the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.

The two-day forum, slated for 25 and 26 October, will showcase progress in the implementation of the Global Gateway strategy, the EU's offer for quality, transparent investments in connectivity, health, education and research systems across the world.

While in Belgium, the DP is also scheduled to hold talks with leading coffee and tea buyers and marketers as part of Kenya's efforts to expand the global market for local farmers.

"In Germany, I will further hold discussions with leading coffee buyers to explore ways of cooperation in the revival of the sub-sector," Gachagua stated.

"We remain focused and determined to deliver on our promise to dignify small holder farmers in coffee, tea, and milk subsectors for the good of our beloved nation."

Gachagua's bid to crush cartels

The country's second in command has in recent months reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to reviving tea and coffee subsectors.

He has been vocal about dismantling cartels and brokers who he claims are part of the long-standing issues plaguing the sector.

“The industry has suffered for so many years under the manipulation of local and international companies, subjecting coffee farmers to grinding poverty by paying them peanuts despite the clean beans fetching premium prices in the international market," Gachagua said during the reopening of the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NSE)) at Wakulima House in Nairobi.
