‘We remain steadfast, united behind President Ruto’ – Gachagua
By Joel Sang, July 9, 2024
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has committed that he is supporting President William Ruto despite recent reports of a fallout between them.
Gachagua made the comment after he joined the President while assenting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Amendment Bill at the KICC on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
“We remain steadfast and united behind President William Ruto in enabling commissions and independent offices to discharge their mandates as dictated by the people under the constitution,” Gachagua said in a statement posted on his X handle.
The IEBC amendment bill is based on the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report and Ruto lauded it as a perfect way to entrench democracy in the country.
“The Assent to the IEBC Amendment Bill marks a significant step in the actualization of one of the recommendations of NADCO and the signing of this Bill paves way for the establishment of a selection panel for the appointment of IEBC Commissioners.
“The IEBC remains a cornerstone of our democracy responsible for overseeing regular elections at various levels ensuring that our electoral cycle is managed transparently and administered in an impartial neutral, efficient, accurate and accountable manner,” Ruto said at the KICC.
Ruto lauded
Meanwhile, Gachagua lauded Ruto saying that the President is committed to a united nation through dialogue.
After a national uproar spearheaded by Gen Z over the past weeks, Ruto has taken measures to de-escalate the tension. He withdrew the controversial Finance Bill 2024, and also went ahead to propose a multi-sectoral dialogue forum between his government and the youth.
Gachagua lauded all these steps taken by the President.
“It is a show of the Head of State’s commitment to structural facilitation of a vibrant democracy and good governance.
“It is also a direct intervention of addressing issues raised by the People through continuous multisectoral dialogue in the spirit of collectively building a stronger and better Kenya-firmly founded in consultations and the rule of law,” the former Mathira Member of Parliament added.
