Gachagua advised to tone down rhetoric or risk being impeached

An association of clerics has issued a stern warning to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, cautioning that he risks being impeached if he continues to promote divisive politics under the “one man, one vote, one shilling” mantra.

The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) said it was concerned about Gachagua’s rhetoric.

“We are warning the Deputy President against fuelling political tension. The ongoing debate he is igniting about one man, one vote, one shilling is unconstitutional,” said CIPK organising secretary Sheikh Abdallah Ateka at a press briefing in Mombasa.

Gachagua, he emphasised, was elected to serve the entire nation not just a single community. “His notion that government resources should be allocated based on community shareholding is misguided. There are numerous critical issues he should be addressing instead.”

Gachagua’s position as DP was secured through national votes, not just those from Central Kenya, Ateka elaborated. He warned that the DP’s remarks were fostering discord, particularly in marginalised and underdeveloped regions of the country.

“Our advice to Gachagua is to reconsider his statements because his office should symbolise national unity” Ateka said.

Echoing Ateka’s sentiments, CIPK national treasurer Sheikh Hassan Omar said if Gachagua uses his office to divide the nation, he warrants being impeached.

“He does not deserve to hold that position if he continues in this manner,” Omar declared.
