Five nominees to serve in TSC after legislators nod

Members of Parliament yesterday approved President Uhuru Kenyatta’s five nominees to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

 The lawmakers endorsed a report of the education committee chaired by Florence Mutua that cleared them on grounds that they had met all the qualifications as required.

 The nominees are: Nicodemus Anyang, Christine Kahindi, Sharon Kisire, Annceta Wafukho and Salesa Abudo.

 “Mr Speaker I request this House to approve the nomination of Nicodemus Anyang, Christine Kahindi, Sharon Kisire, Annceta Wafukho and Salesa Abudo,”Mutua said.

 Leader of Majority Amos Kimunya said the five have the right qualifications to sit as commissioners.

 “I support this report. I commend the work of the committee, ensuring compliance with the law and taking them through vetting exercise.

When you look at the five nominees, you see people who have gone to school and received adequate education unlike before where they have appointed people who have no qualified education background,” he said.

 Mbadi while endorsing the nominee said in future there is need for the minority communities to be considered.

 But Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere opposed the nominees on grounds that persons from marginalised communities including the Ndorombo which she comes from was not given an opportunity to sit in the committee.

 “She claimed that a person from her community who was well educated was denied an opportunity to serve as her name was rigged out from the interviews at the last minute.

 “For me it is a sad day, I don’t have anything to celebrate about, because the marginalised and the minorities were rigged out of this process. The handshake took all our gains” she said.

 The approval of the five came after Uhuru last month forwarded the names of five nominees to parliament for vetting and approval.
