Ex-Nyatike MP on the spot over gun attack
A middle-aged man is nursing gunshot injuries after former Nyatike MP Edick Omondi Anyanga allegedly shot him.
Thirty-five-year-old Justus Ochieng was in the company of his friend shortly after he left a local pub at Lwanda Konyango at around midnight when the former MP, who is seeking to recapture the seat from the incumbent, trade unionist Tom Odege, shot him.
A police report seen by People Daily, Ochieng was in the company of his friend Calvins Omondi when he was confronted by Anyanga and his personnel in his vehicle accusing him of going against his political ambitions. It was reported that Anyanga threatened him before discharging his firearm and shooting Ochieng on the right side of the hip.
“MP candidate Nyatike constituency Edick Anyanga Omondi and his personnel started threatening Justus Ochieng while inside the vehicle claiming that he has been going against his political ambitions and in the process, he (Omondi) discharged his firearm shooting Justus on his right side of the hip and sustaining injuries,” the police report read in part. Ochieng was taken to Sori Lakeside Hospital where he is currently admitted and in stable condition.
Be vigilant
The police later recovered Anyanga’s pistol and a magazine containing 12 live ammunition caliber 9mm. The officers also recovered the spent cartridge which police say will be used as exhibits.
A resident who sought anonymity termed the incident as unfortunate and called on the National Police Service to act swiftly and protect citizens from such intimidation.
“It is unfortunate that Anyanga has resorted to maiming supporters of Tom Odege. We wish to ask supporters to be vigilant and urge police to address the matter…it is also instructive for NPS to move with speed and disarm the former MP for the safety of our people,” he stated.
