Maraga attends swearing-in of 6 judges as Ruto pledges to support Judiciary

Retired Chief Justice David Maraga on Wednesday, September 14 attended the swearing-in of six judges that were nominated by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in 2019.

The judges took the oath of office at State House, Nairobi, in a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto.

The judges who have been serving in the High Court and have now been promoted to the Court of Appeal include Korir Weldon Kipyegon, Muchelule Aggrey Otsyula, Odunga George Vincent, and Prof. Joel Mwaura Ngugi.

Others are Makori Evans Kiago and Cheruiyot Omange Judith Elizabeth who have been appointed to Environment and Land Court.

Ruto promises to support Judiciary

In his address after the swearing-in, the President said his administration will support the Judiciary to deliver on its mandate.

“I am aware there is a need for us to support the Judiciary to dispense justice and make it less complicated and more accessible,” Ruto said.

The President further asked the Judiciary to expedite the hearing and determination of corruption and commercial cases.

“I look forward to working with the Judiciary as we move our country to the next level. I want to ask the Judiciary to support our government to ensure that corruption and commercial cases are completed in a timely manner,” he stated.

The Head of State also said his administration will respect the independence of the Judiciary and other government institutions.

“I want to assure you that my administration will respect the independence of the Judiciary and other institutions. We are all equal before the law,” he added.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Chief Justice Martha Koome, her deputy Philomena Mwilu and Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Ann Amadi.

Also present was Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
