“The Force Commander of Operation Atalanta’s 52nd rotation Rear Admiral Daniele Martinuzzi, made the comments during a visit to the Port of Mombasa,” the statement reads.

On the Kenyan side, officials representing the authority reiterated the value of the long-standing partnership with European forces, especially in ensuring that trade routes remain open and safe.

“In his remarks on behalf of Chief Executive Officer Captain Ruto, General Manager Cargo Operations Sudi Mwasinago underscored the importance of the long-standing partnership, emphasising that European forces remain essential in safeguarding maritime trade routes,” the statement reads.

“We deeply acknowledge the role played by the forces in ensuring that international trade is not disrupted by insecurity,” Mwasinago remarked.

Operation Atalanta continues to play a central role in securing one of the world’s most important shipping lanes, working with regional partners like Kenya to address threats such as piracy and illegal activities at sea.

“Operation Atalanta, an EU naval security mission, works to enhance maritime safety across the Western Indian Ocean, bolster regional capacity, and ensure safe passage for vessels operating along one of the world’s most vital trade corridors,” the statement reads.
