Employers hired more men than women in 2022 – survey

Employers in the country hired more men than women in 2022, a survey shows.

According to the report revealed by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), 81 percent of men and 60 percent of women were hired in the 12 months before the survey was conducted.

The data also indicated that employment was higher in both groups past the age of 25 with men consistently dominating the labour force.

“60% of women and 81% of men were employed in the 12 months before the survey. Employment s higher with both groups past age 25,” the report reads in parts.

Currently, 77 percent of men have been employed compared to 52 percent of women.

“An additional 7% of women and 3% of men reported working in the past 12 months although they are not currently employed,” the report added.

Similarly, the survey indicated that more men were literate compared to women with the statistics standing at 94 and 91 respectively.

The survey showed tremendous progress in education among women after the percentage of women with no education declined from 13 percent in 2003 to 6 percent in 2022.

Data revealed also indicated that the percentage of women with more than secondary education rose to 19 percent from 6 percent during the periods aforementioned.

The report also revealed that 6 percent of women and 3 percent of men between the age of 15 and 49 have never attended school whereas 19 percent of women and 21 percent of men have more than a secondary education.

The data, as per the report, was derived from an interview conducted among 32,156 women aged between 15-49 and 14,453 men between the age of 15 and 54.
