Education minister under fire for ‘profiling’ journalist

Muslim professionals yesterday lashed out at Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha for allegedly profiling a journalist based on her religion.

The professionals under the aegis of Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), demanded an apology from the CS as they also called on National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to take action against him.

They also called on the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) to take up the matter immediately since the journalist is an accredited member.

“The consequences of this profiling especially from a leader of this stature are to undermine the Constitutional and human rights to religion, human dignity and press freedom,” SUPKEM deputy secretary general Hassan Ole Naado (pictured) said, in a press conference held in Nairobi.

Naado also noted that the utterances by the CS, said to have been made two weeks ago, also undercuts efforts to eradicate violent extremism, one of the greatest security threats to the country.

The storm kicked off after a clip of the CS allegedly dressing down the journalist circulated online, with critics describing the utterances as unacceptable.  Garissa Township Mp, Aden Duale, separately described the CS utterances as unbecoming.
