EACC grills 28 county officials over graft

By , December 15, 2021

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has commenced investigations into the possible loss of over Ksh600 million at Nyandarua county government and the County Assembly during the 2019/2020 financial year.

Already the commission has summoned 28 MCAs and two officers said to be behind the suspected misappropriation.

Addressing the press at the EACC offices in Nyeri, Central region head Charles Rusungu said the grilling of the MCAs will take at least one week, during which each will be given a chance to respond to allegations raised against them.

“It is true, we are investigating the loss after it was reported to us. We understand that each of the elected MCAs received 240,000 for refurbishing their ward offices directly to their account, while Nominated MCAs received Sh120,000 each to go towards Covid-19 mitigation efforts.

The money was directly wired to their individual accounts contrary to the procurement act,” Rusungu said.

He said the commission was also investigating two members of the county executive regarding a Sh500 million illegal expenditure.

However, Wanjohi ward MCA Isaac Wanjiru denied the claim saying the investigations are politically instigated
