Drivers, boda boda riders urged to observe traffic rules
By KNA, December 21, 2023The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada), in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), is carrying out a road safety campaign.
Speaking during the flagging-off ceremony at the County Commissioner’s office in Uasin Gishu County, Roads and Transport County Executive Committee Member Joseph Lagat said the campaign will create awareness on the causes and effects of road accidents and share policies that can reduce accidents.
“We have the mandate to ensure road users adhere to the rules and regulations set by the government,” he said.
Uasin Gishu Deputy County Police Commander Paul Wambugu urged matatu drivers to avoid speeding and reckless driving and to respect the lives of their passengers and other road users.
“It is during the festive season that accidents are at their highest. Doing the campaign on how people use the roads both as drivers and passengers will reduce fatalities during the festive season,” said Wambugu.
Nacada North Rift Regional Manager Eunice Arubia pointed out that alcohol and drug abuse significantly contributes to road accidents.
She urged drivers and boda boda operators not to operate vehicles and motorbikes while they are under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
County Chairman Uasin Gishu Matatu Sacco Union Fred Wamu said they will ensure that drivers adhere to road safety rules during festive season and continue to create awareness on the dangers of drunk driving, speeding and overworking.
County Chairman Uasin Gishu Boda Boda Union Nahashon Kipchumba stated that the riders will be sensitised on the need to be careful when carrying passengers.
