Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) James Macharia on Tuesday urged truck drivers not to start their transit journey if they will not comply with the Covid-19 rules set at the border point.

“We have put adequate measures to reopen the border(Malaba) and we tell those causing the problem that you do not have to drive towards the border. If you have grievances against entering Uganda, don’t leave Mombasa,” Said CS Macharia.

The CS said authorities have identified three drivers who allegedly incited their colleagues on transit to Uganda, causing a heavy snarl-up at Malaba border.

At Malaba, drivers alleging harassment by Uganda Police on Tuesday halted movement, causing heavy traffic that extended over 50km.

Among the rules that CS Macharia was referring to is a mandatory testing and issuance of a certificate to show that a driver is Covid-19 free.

“You must get a Covid-19 free certificate, 48 hours before commencing your journey,” said the CS.

CS Macharia said he had engaged EAC and Regional Development CS Adan Mohamed to ensure flawless flow of cargo to Uganda.

Coronavirus in Kenya

On Tuesday, Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman confirmed 62 more coronavirus cases, totaling to 1348. Kenya has 405 total recoveries and 52 fatalities.
