Don’t punish my family for my sins, Amos Wako tells US

Busia County Senator Amos Wako has warned the US government against involving his family in the corruption woes facing him.

Reacting to his recent travel ban to the US over alleged corruption, the former Attorney General (AG) said that his family was out while he served as the AG.

“My family was not involved at all when I was discharging my functions as the AG and they should not be punished for my sins,” said the Busia Senator.

On Monday, November 18, the US State Secretary Michael Pompeo banned Wako from visiting the US alongside his wife and son over his (Wako) involvement in ‘significant corruption’ while he was serving as the AG.

Wako retorted that the US was unfairly targeting him because in 2009, he was issued with a similar ban.

The Senator faulted the US government for not providing substantial evidence that he was involved in graft.

On the allegations that he had failed to prosecute graft lords while he was the AG, Wako replied that there was not even a single corruption case presented on his table that he failed to process.

In 2009 when Wako was issued with the first ban, his attorney in the US moved to seek clarification into the matter.

The US government never found Wako guilty of any corruption case, said Wako.

Wako termed the ban as malicious and that the corruption allegations infringed on his fundamental rights.
