Doctors issue demands over posting of medical interns
By George.Kebaso, February 21, 2024Health services across the country could be disrupted come March 1 if the government does not fulfill its promise of employing over 1,000 medical interns who have been waiting for the last 12 months.
Doctors under the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Densists Union (KMPDU) have threatened to down tools, accusing the government of engaging in empty promises without addressing their welfare.
Medics also termed delay in posting the medical interns a deliberate hindrance to their ability to fulfill individual duties.
“We are putting the Ministry of Health, Treasury, Council of Governors and the whole country on notice that if by March 1, we do not have direction on the posting of interns, all doctors across the country will be on a go slow,” KMPDU Secretary General, Dr Davji Atellah (pictured) said during a press conference yesterday at Kenya Medical Association Plaza.
He noted that the delay to post medical interns is a calculated move by the government to stifle their career progression. “The government seems to have adopted the policy of train and dump,” added Dr Atellah.
