Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has declared that he is the chairperson of the Gen Z group.

In a statement on Sunday, June 30, 2024, the vocal lawmaker who was elected to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) noted that he had picked himself to represent the Gen Z group which has conspicuously insisted that they do not have a leader.

However, Didmus emphasised that he had taken over the role and challenged the other youth to pick another person to deputise him.

In a more jesting tone, Didmus Barasa indicated that he was ready to counter anyone opposed to his appointment as chairman.

"Today I have appointed myself as chairman of Gen Z. I now need a Vice-chair….from to now Gen Z are nolonger leaderless," Didmus's statement read in part.

Despite his announcement, he did not elaborate if he wanted to champion their interests following President William Ruto's announcement on engaging the youth through a multi-sectoral forum.

Didmus's association with Gen Z after voting YES

Didmus Barasa has been on a mission to make amends with the young people after supporting the Finance Bill 2024.

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, Didmus used the same rhetoric to address while assuring his constituents that he push for the development agenda despite President Ruto ordering the withdrawal of the contentious Finance Bill.

"I can assure you, the people of Kimilili, that you will never walk alone. Anything that I get, I will share with you because you are very special people.

"Nyinyi mumeona rais ametoa jopo la kushughulikia mwaswala ya vijana wale wanaitwa Gen Z. Mimi mwenyewe nimefika hapa, na hata mkiniona sura yangu si mimi ninakaa Gen Z? Mimi ni Gen Z ama mimi ni mtu mzee? Mimi ni Gen Z senior,(You have all seen that the President has picked a taskforce to address Gen Z's issues. Can you all see that I resemble Gen Z? I'm an old person or a Gen Z? I'm a senior Gen Z)" Barasa said on Saturday, June 29, 2024, in a rally held in Kimilili.

Ruto's plan to engage the youth

After writing to the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Masika Wetang'ula to delete all clauses in the rejected Finance Bill 2024, President William Ruto unveiled a new framework for addressing the concern raised by disgruntled youth.

Ruto ordered the formation of a National Multi-sectoral Committee and multi-stakeholder forum to address Gen Z's issues.

Among the agendas to be discussed by the state and the youth are jobs and other opportunities; the nation's tax policy; the national debt burden; representation and accountability; and anti-corruption measures.

However, some of the young people have opposed the approach insisting that their demands are public.
