Exhibits secured

The persons of interest, were caught on the spot. The DCI statement notes that the duo, along with the confiscated sandalwood, has been escorted to Nyahururu Police Station for processing pending arraignment. The seized wood and the vehicle are being securely held as exhibits, marking a critical step in dismantling the illegal trade network.

“Acting on reliable intelligence, the team sprang into action along the Nyahururu-Rumuruti road, where they successfully intercepted a vehicle bearing the registration number KAX 049C.”

This operation underscores the authorities’ commitment to curbing the exploitation of endangered species, with sandalwood harvesting banned in Kenya since 2007 due to its overexploitation for essential oils used in perfumes and incense.

The DCI commended the officers involved for their swift action in executing the mission, saying their coordination reflected dedication and vigilance in enforcing conservation laws.

Government reaffirms commitment to curb illegal trade

The successful interception serves as a strong reminder of the government’s resolve to combat illegal trade, as emphasised in the DCI’s statement: “This operation serves as a strong reminder of the government’s commitment to combat illegal trade and the protection of valuable natural resources,” continued the DCI statement

The operation highlights the importance of public cooperation. The DCI has encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities anonymously via toll-free line 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.

“Meanwhile, the seized sandalwood and the vehicle are being securely held as exhibits.”
