Detectives drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) have arrested two Ugandan nationals following an intelligence-led operation that led to the recovery of a substantial consignment of cannabis sativa along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in Limuru.

Taking it to their social media handles on Friday, May 22, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said that they were following up on a tip-off that the persons of interest were engaged in the transport of drugs along a heavily trafficked highway corridor. The officers struck fast and set an ambush on a white Toyota Hiace believed to have been carrying the drugs from Kakamega to Nairobi.

“Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) have arrested two drug traffickers, seizing a stash of cannabis sativa. Thanks to intelligence leads about the suspects’ illicit activities, the detectives set up an ambush in Limuru along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway. Their patience paid off when they intercepted a white Toyota Hiace cruising from Kakamega to Nairobi,” the DCI statement read in part.

The detectives have noted that the operation was a success as the car got caught up in Limuru. They have also confirmed that when searched later, two black bags were found in the van. Tightly packed bales of cannabis sativa were carefully wrapped in yellow cellotape.

The detective unit has further confirmed that the two persons of interest, both Ugandan nationals, were arrested at the scene.

Crackdown on drug trafficking syndicates

Police said the duo is being held at Muthaiga Police Station for processing before being arraigned in court. The narcotics found have been captured and are being used as evidence in the ongoing investigation to determine the extent of the trafficking operation and any potential cross-border connections.

The police have beefed up operations to crack down on drug trafficking syndicates that are allegedly smuggling narcotics from western Kenya into the capital city of Nairobi and other destinations.
