Nairobi Process

The EAC-led Nairobi Process is a regional peace initiative aimed at resolving the conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Launched in April 2022, it is based on principles of inclusivity, dialogue, ownership, regional leadership, and international support.

This process seeks to engage all stakeholders, including the DRC government, armed groups, civil society organizations, and the international community, in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict through dialogue and negotiation, with a focus on regional leadership from the East African Community (EAC).

Uhuru was appointed by the EAC Heads of State as the facilitator to champion peace and oversee the implementation of the Nairobi Process.

He was tasked with coordinating and leading a comprehensive peace process involving political dialogue, military interventions, and ensuring inclusivity in the inter-Congolese dialogue.

Since his appointment, Uhuru has held a series of meetings with the leaders from the region in a bid to end the conflict. In January 2023, Uhuru made significant progress after he met with the chairman and senior political and military leaders of the M-23 group.

Following the meeting, the M-23 leaders agreed to continue with an orderly withdrawal and to adhere to a strict cease-fire.

They further agreed to continue to respect and cooperate with the East African Regional Force (EARF).
