Planned demos against abductions

With the recent spate of abductions, activists in social media have planned a protest to coerce the government into releasing a group of youth who have been reported missing.

While the demonstrations lack clear indications of where they will start or end, it remains to be seen if police officers will provide security for the protesters or quash the march altogether.

The demos come at a time when former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja whom he says must take responsibility for the disappeared youth.

This comes just days after President William Ruto promised to bring to an end the recent wave of abductions, with the Kenya National Commission of Human Rights (KNCHR) noting that 82 people have been abducted since the June protests.

Out of these, 29 have yet to be accounted for, while seven cases have been reported in the last 14 days.

“Complicity is at the centre of police inaction and the president’s silence,” Amnesty International executive director Irungu Houghton says.

Reactions Gachagua’s call to Gen Zs

During a football tournament in Kakamega, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called on the youth to register in numbers to vote out the current regime and bring in fresh leadership.

Gachagua who was accompanied by several leaders from the Mount Kenya region and Western Kenya urged the youth to not only limit their interactions to social media but also register and vote in their numbers.

“We appreciate the good job you are doing online. However, we want you to register as voters because it is the Gen Z voters who will determine the leadership of this country in 2027,” Gachagua said.
