The death toll on Wednesday night’s accident in Narok County has risen to four after one more person died at Longisa County Hospital.

Narok South Deputy Police Commander Magdalene Chebet said three passengers died on the spot after the matatu swerved to avoid hitting a Boda Boda rider. She said the accident happened at Koitamugul, along the Narok-Bomet highway, about 7km from Mulot centre, in Narok West.

“The matatu was being driven by Geoffrey Aburi Mariera from Narok direction to Bomet general direction with 10 passengers. On reaching the location of the accident, the driver saw a motorcyclist ahead, heading in the same direction,” she said.

Rolled and hit lorry

“He tried to avoid hitting the motorcycle but lost control of the matatu, which rolled several times and hit a lorry travelling in the opposite direction — driven by one Julius Rutto, aged 36. It then landed in a ditch on the left side of the road towards Bomet,” said Chebet on phone.

She said three passengers, including a woman and two men, died on the spot while eight sustained injuries.

The driver of the lorry suffered soft tissue injuries on the right leg while his passenger, Isaac Bett, 25, escaped unhurt.

The police boss said the injured were taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital, where the fourth victim died. The bodies were taken to the hospital’s mortuary, pending identification and postmortem examination.

The matatu was extensively damaged. The two vehicles were towed to the Ololulunga Police Station.
