Cyber security firm boss challenge to female students

Female students have been challenged to take up Information Communication Technology (ICT) courses to enable them fit in the competitive global job market.

ICT experts regretted that the majority of female learners shy off from the ICT courses thereby leaving the tech space to men.

Speaking at Zetech University during a workshop dubbed ‘Women in Tech competition’ for female learners drawn from various higher learning institutions, the experts led by Eve Kilel of SheHacks, a cyber-security firm, quipped that there are numerous opportunities in digital workspace that the youth can take advantage of to make a decent income.

“There is an urgent need for organisations to come together and jointly encourage more girls to undertake ICT courses for the sake of their future. The challenge should begin in high schools where girls should be mentored to choose the ICT career paths,” said Kilel.

Kilel observed that there are numerous opportunities in the tech world including working remotely even for firms abroad. “You can for instance work for a firm in Germany or the UK while living in Kenya. Also, many organisations in the country have job openings whereby one can work at the comfort of their homes,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Zetech University’s Director of Research and Innovation Esther Wanjiru (left) who decried only five percent in a class of 50 students were undertaking IT-related courses, including Computer Science and Software Engineering.
