Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has defended the construction industry following the recent building collapse in South C, Nairobi, saying isolated incidents should not be seen as a reflection of the entire sector.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, Kinyanjui emphasised the strategic importance of the construction industry to Kenya’s economy while acknowledging the need for stringent safety measures.

“The construction industry remains a key driver of our economy, supporting thousands of jobs across the value chain. It is a strategic sector with immense opportunities for growth,” Kinyanjui stated.

The CS highlighted the sector’s critical role in driving economic growth and employment, citing the World Bank’s forecasts.

“This outlook is further reinforced by the World Bank economic growth forecast, which points to a pickup in construction activity as a key contributor to improved economic performance,” he added.

Industry-wide reflection

While expressing regret over the South C incident, Kinyanjui cautioned against using the event to characterise the entire construction sector.

“While we regret the recent collapse of a building in Nairobi, this incident must not be construed as a reflection of the entire industry,” he said.

The CS pledged that his ministry would work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that isolated failures do not overshadow the sector’s overall positive contribution to the economy.

“My Ministry will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that a few failures do not overshadow the greater good,” he added.

Safety measures promised

The Cabinet Secretary announced that stringent measures would be implemented immediately to safeguard public safety and restore confidence in the construction sector.

“Stringent and effective measures to safeguard public safety and restore confidence must be undertaken with immediate effect,” He said.

He also revealed plans to liaise with county governments to create a more conducive environment for sustainable growth in the sector.

“I will also be liaising with devolved governments to create a more conducive and efficient environment for sustainable growth in the sector,” Kinyanjui stated.
