A Makadara court yesterday released former Mungiki leader John Maina Njenga on a cash bail of Sh100,000.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia said there was no compelling reason to deny Njenga bail.

The magistrate said he had considered the submissions by the defence and the prosecution before granting the bail terms.

He said it was the accused person’s constitutional right to be released on bail pending trial as the prosecution had not proved how the accused would interfere with witnesses.

“I accordingly order him to be released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 pending the hearing and determination of this case,” said the magistrate. Njenga was given an alternative bond of Sh 200,000.

Njenga is charged alongside his brother Peter Njoroge and Felix Ratu that they had fourteen machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus and three jembe sticks in circumstances which raised reasonable presumption that the weapons were intended to be used in prejudicial to public order.
Njoroge and Ratu have also been granted cash bails of Sh100,000 each.
