Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Beverly Opwora has declared war against deviant Kavonokia sect members who refuse to send their children to school and seeking medical treatment in hospitals when sick.

Speaking in Tharaka North sub-county she said the government cannot sit back and watch as wayward religious organisations continue to deny children their right to education and medical attention.

“As from tomorrow, any parent who fails to send their children to school will become a guest of the state. This unbecoming behaviour has to stop immediately,” said Opwora.

She directed the Tharaka North Deputy County Commissioner to scrutinise the registration certificates of all churches in the sub-county and ensure those found without valid ones are closed down immediately. 

“Registration as a religious organisation is no excuse to break the law. All religious organisations are expected to adhere to the rule of law and Kavonokia is not an exception,” said Opwora.

 The Kavonokia sect members who hold prayers at Gatiithine in the sub-county have opposed to many government programmes including the recently concluded National Housing and Population census and the ‘Huduma Namba’ registration.

By the time the census exercise was being concluded, many members of the sect were arraigned in court and jailed for declaring that they would not participate in worldly matters.
