Cop killed by explosive hidden in donkey cart

By , January 19, 2024

A police officer was killed and two others injured yesterday after a bomb that was concealed within a donkey cart exploded at the cross border between Mandera town and Bula Hawa.

According to police headquarters, the two donkeys were crossing with luggage from the Somalia side and had a guide when the controlled Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off at Ina Bari crossing point.

The officers manning the border had stopped the animals with their guide for usual inspection for contraband goods and other unwanted goods when the cart went off at around 9.50am.

Witnesses and police said the explosion caused a huge fire at the scene and that the two donkeys were injured.

Terror attacks

A joint operation was launched in the area but by yesterday evening it had not borne fruits.

Detectives suspect the explosive was remotely controlled by Al Shabaab militants operating in the area.

“Authorities are swiftly responding to the incident, conducting investigations to ascertain details surrounding the attack. Security measures are being heightened to ensure the safety of the area and its residents,” police said.

The country has witnessed a decrease in terror attacks in the last few months.

Though numerous plots by the Al Shaabab and its network have been uncovered and neutralised ahead of time, several of the attacks have succeeded, resulting in the brutal killing of innocent civilians and security personnel.
