A controversial National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer and a former General Service Unit (GSU) Recce officer has been arrested for shooting dead a man at close range in Nairobi’s Umoja estate yesterday morning.

Police have launched investigations into the shooting whose motive was yet to be established at the time of going to press.

Kamukunji Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) said witnesses reported seeing two people argue before the officer reached out for his gun and shot his colleague on the head, killing him on the spot.

Police officers rushed to the scene where they found the suspect who identified himself as Constable Jason Nyamollo, but did not say where he was attached.

The officers recovered a Glock pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

He was arrested and placed in custody as investigations commenced. The body with a single gunshot wound on the head was removed to the City Mortuary awaiting postmortem and identification.

Eyewitnesses said the officer who was violent attempted to escape from the scene but was cornered by members of the public who also beat him up.

Sources said the officer joined the GSU in 2003 and was later deployed to the Recce Unit. He later joined the University of Nairobi as a security officer before joining Kenya Airways in the same capacity.

The officer is not new to controversy and had earlier been arrested at the Kamukunji Police Station.

Concerns have been raised over misuse of police and other security agencies firearms in the recent past.

Some of these cases are under investigations by the police oversight bodies, the Independent Oversight Policing Authority and the Internal Affairs Unit.
