Constitution at 15: Karua calls for renewal of Kenya’s founding promise

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has stressed the importance of upholding and protecting the constitution of the land as a crucial part of achieving true liberation or freedom.

In a concise statement this Wednesday, August 27, 2025, amid the observance of Katiba Day, Karua underscored that Kenyans have the solemn obligation to defend and protect the constitution as the only way of achieving full-scale liberation.

“Our liberation is not complete without fidelity to the spirit and letter of the constitution. Let us defend and protect it,” a statement from the leader read as shared by her PLP party.

Karua, who has been a key figure in the struggle for constitutional reform and justice, earlier shared her vision of what the adoption of the Constitution on August 27, 2010, was aimed at.

“On 27th August 2010, Kenya chose a new path. The Constitution we promulgated was not just about law; it was about the ordinary Kenyan,” she wrote.

Karua emphasised that the Constitution was designed to bring tangible change to the lives of everyday citizens.

“It was about the mother in Turkana finally having a clinic nearby. It was about the farmer in Migori receiving market access support for their goods. It was about the child in Kibera accessing education and a meal with dignity,” the X statement read.

Bottlenecks to the constitution

Karua, however, warned that the transformative promise of the Constitution is being undermined by current governance failures.

“15 years later, that promise is under threat. We see abductions, torture, economic hardships, attacks on devolution, and leaders who place self above service,” she warned.

Karua’s sentiment comes after she joined her fellow brigade of opposition politicians at the Kalonzo Musyoka Command Centre on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

In a post on his official X page, Kalonzo Musyoka confirmed hosting a deliberation with the opposition outfit.

He revealed that their discussion revolved around the strategies of rescuing the nation from what he termed a rogue regime.

“Our sister Hon. Martha Karua, Hon. Mithika Linturi and Hon. Mukhisa Kituyi, have joined H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, Hon. Fred Matiang’i, Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, Hon. JB Muturi, Hon. Saitoti Torome and I this afternoon at the SKM Command Centre as we continue to deliberate on strategies to rescue our nation from this rogue regime,”he stated.
