A female Administration Police Constable on Saturday shot her lover 11 times, killing him instantly under unclear circumstances.

Constable Lilian Biwot, 32, of Critical Infrastructure Police Unit, attached to Eldoret Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) said she had a quarrel with her husband on Saturday evening before proceeding to work at Kebs offices.

The suspect claims she went back to the house in Chepkoilel, Moiben sub-county to check on her children but the husband, Victor Kipchumba, 36, threatened to stab her using a kitchen knife. She further claimed she shot him in self defence.

She then fled from the house before reporting the matter at Eldoret Police Station where she was arrested.

Neigbours said the couple had been having frequent quarrels for a while before the unfortunate incident. The couple was again heard quarreling after the suspect went to the house before gunshots rent the air, forcing neighbours to flee for safety.

Detectives from Scenes of Crime visited the scene and collected exhibits for further analysis. The detectives also reported that the deceased was found in a pool of blood with several bullet wounds, lying prone in his bed. The couple’s four children who were in the house during the incident escaped unhurt.

Uasin Gishu Police County Commander Benjamin Mwanthi said they are yet to establish the motive of the killing, however, they have launched investigations.

“An AK47 rifle, serial number KE AP59010335, 11 spent cartridges and three bullet heads were recovered at the scene and kept as exhibits,” police said.

Female officer

Mwanthi said the female officer is in custody and will be arraigned once investigations are complete. The body was transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital awaiting postmortem.

In another unclear circumstance, another Police Constable is suspected to have been killed by her lover on Saturday in Kaptumo, Nandi South sub-county.

The suspect, Nelly Jepchirchir, 35, initially reported that the deceased identified as Constable Bernard Mudia attached to Kaptumo Police Station who had been feeling unwell was unconscious.

Officers rushed to the residence and found the man in bed, with visible physical injury on the left side of the face.

“Traces of blood were also seen on the bed and blood-stained clothes believed to have been worn by the officer during the day were found soaked in a basin,” police said.

There have been several cases of fatal shootings involving officers. In the last two weeks, at least three officers have shot themselves dead in unclear circumstances. On Wednesday last week, a police driver attached to DCI headquarters shot himself at the parking yard in unclear circumstances.

Parking yard

The officer, aged 59, was due to retire next month and it was not immediately established why he died by suicide. His colleagues said the deceased locked himself in the car  before shooting himself in the chest.

The officers who rushed to the car said they were alerted by the sound of a gunshot from the parking lot and on checking they found him dead. The fatal shooting came barely a week after another senior officer, Supritendent Ezra Ouma also shot himself dead in Utawala, Athi River Sub-County on October 5.

SP Ouma shot a man he had earlier disagreed with before proceeding to his residence when he turned the gun on himself.

Ouma had called his younger brother and former Rift valley Police Commander, informing them that he had shot someone in a club.
