Parents with learners at St Teresa Girls Yala have been advised to be wary of fraudsters requesting them to clear fee balances on behalf of the school.

Headteacher, Sister Violet Lydia Namutali, said her administration had received a complaint that a parent was conned of Sh9,000 by the fraudsters who pretended to be calling on behalf of the school to demand he clears the school fees balance.

She said some unknown people — while pretending to be education officials — went to the school on October 30 and fraudulently obtained the visitors’ book, which they have now been using to demand money from parents.

“We suspect there was a mischievous activity between the suspects and some non-teaching staff that were at the gate, and they got away with the book that had details of the parents who visited the school,” said the school head. “We reported the matter to the Yala police and they are still investigating. We informed the parents and cautioned them against sending any money in the name of an official from the school.”

Gem sub-county police Commander Charles Chacha, through a phone interview, said the police are still going on with investigations.

Affected investigations

Police efforts to trace the suspects have hit a snag for they have scanty information. “We have not managed to arrest anybody concerning the matter. The information that the police got from the school, including the suspected registration number of the vehicle, is incomplete. This has affected the investigations so far,” said the sub-county police boss.
